That’s why you choose Slings & Things
Carrying your baby is a wonderful way to connect with your little one while keeping your hands free. There are many different ways to carry your baby, and carrying your baby facing forward is one of them. This is also known as face forward carrying. Although this position may seem appealing because it gives your baby a better view of the world, it is important to understand why it may actually be a poor choice.
First, carrying your baby facing forward can hinder the development of your baby's hips. It is important for a baby's hips to be held in what is known as the "M-position", meaning that the knees should be higher than the hips and the hips should be tilted slightly forward. This promotes proper development of the hip joints and reduces the risk of hip dysplasia, a condition in which the hip joints are abnormally formed. When a baby is carried facing forward, it is much more difficult to keep the hips in the correct position. The baby's legs hang straight down, which means the hips are not held at the correct angle. This can lead to problems with hip development and hip dysplasia.
Another problem with carrying your baby facing forward is that it overstimulation can cause. Babies are vulnerable and sensitive to overstimulation, especially when they are exposed to many new stimuli. When a baby is carried facing forward, they can become overwhelmed by all the new impressions and sensations. This can lead to anxiety and restlessness. In addition, it is more difficult for the baby to withdraw and hide when they become overwhelmed. If the baby is carried facing the parent, they can easily withdraw and feel safe against the parent's chest.
Your baby is also in the face forward position not in an ideal position and it can make the centre of gravity uncomfortable for the wearer. In addition, it can trigger the sucking reflex and it can be dangerous if not used correctly.
Finally, carrying your baby facing forwards can also be a problem for your baby's neck and back. Babies have not yet developed neck muscles and need their head and neck to be supported while being carried. When a baby is carried facing outward, they have to keep their head raised constantly to see their surroundings. This can lead to overuse of the neck muscles and may ultimately result in pain and discomfort.
We can therefore conclude that carrying your baby facing outward may seem appealing, but it can actually be harmful to your baby's development. If you carry your baby facing you, they have a more active posture, which contributes to good motor development. By carrying your baby close to you in an ergonomic baby carrier or baby wrap, you contribute to your baby's healthy development. Carrying your baby facing outward does not offer any of these benefits. It is of course important to think for yourself and use the information to make an informed choice.
