It’s lovely and cold outside, and at Slings & Things we regularly get asked: what do I dress my baby in when using a baby wrap or carrier? In this blog, we’ll tell you what you should not do, what to look out for and what the alternatives are.

There are so many lovely jumpsuits for sale, but be careful with jumpsuits (or trousers) that have feet attached. Although this may seem handy at first glance, these jumpsuits have more disadvantages than advantages. When you carry ergonomically (you carry your child in the M-position), trousers often ride up. Of course, this also happens with an outfit or trousers with feet attached. A slight pressure on your child's feet and legs is now created. Due to this pressure, the standing reflex of your child is triggered. This is how your child feels ‘ground’ under their feet and may begin to push away. This is not conducive to hip development. The M-position may also be impeded which is a shame, because then you are no longer carrying ergonomically.

Many of the items sold in winter are the so-called teddy bear suits. These suits are quite thick. Not convenient for use in a baby wrap or carrier. It is difficult to achieve the M-position because of the thickness of the outfit and the baby wrap or carrier will also fit less well. Also keep overheating in mind if you choose such a thick outfit.

But what should you choose instead? We have wonderfully comfortable fleece coveralls in the range. You can use these over your child’s clothes. This keeps your child nice and warm, so you don’t need an extra jacket or thick suit. If it’s very cold, you can combine them with a babywearing cover. The fleece overalls are also multifunctional!

We have some that go up to size 98. The bigger kids can also play outside in them wonderfully. They’re great for the bicycle seat, on the sled and so on. They fit generously, so your child has plenty of freedom of movement and you can still achieve the ergonomic M-position in the baby wrap or carrier without triggering the standing reflex.
