Stretchy baby wraps are made from various materials. The most common are (organic) cotton, a combination of cotton and bamboo and often a small percentage of spandex (for stretch). The (stretchy) baby wraps that can go into the water are made of polyester.

Bamboo

Bamboo is soft, supple, highly moisture-regulating, breathable and absorbs perspiration well. This material ensures that the baby wrap does not become ‘sweaty’ and means it can still be used extensively in summer.

Cotton

Most baby wraps are made of cotton or of cotton combined with another material. Cotton is a plant-based fibre; it feels wonderful against the skin without the risk of itching or an allergic reaction. Cotton is both soft and sturdy, absorbs moisture and is easy to clean. Cotton is also actively breathable, which means that excess body heat is released as water vapour. A baby wrap made of cotton can therefore be used all year round. 

Polyester

Polyester is a synthetic fibre that we mainly find in baby wraps and ring slings that can go into the water. Polyester fabrics are elastic, hardly crease and do not need ironing. Polyester fibres absorb very little moisture, so water slings also dry quickly! In the baby wraps containing 1% polyester, the percentage is too low for the fabric to be elastic, crease-free, iron-free and quick-drying. In this case, it is often the ‘glitter’ that has been added.

Spandex

Spandex is an elastic yarn that is often used in fabric in a low percentage as a monofilament yarn. This means that you can think of it as one very long, thin elastic thread. This thread is knitted into the fabric to provide greater carrying comfort and stretch to the baby wrap. A baby wrap containing spandex is supple and soft.

100% Newlife™ yarn

100% Newlife™ yarn is a unique and certified fibre made from recycled PET bottles. A baby wrap made from this material weighs almost nothing but is just as supportive as a woven wrap and just as flexible as a stretchy cotton wrap. The fabric is moisture-regulating and breathable, so wonderfully cool in summer and comfortable in winter too. The fabric is also supple and easy to care for. 100% Newlife™ yarn absorbs very little moisture, so it also dries quickly; that is why you can also go into the water with a baby wrap made from this material if you wish!
